Make use of BFS.
Find all neighbors of U1, then find all neighbors of all neighbors of U1, etc. Once U2 is found, not only do you have a path from U1 to U2, but will also have a shortest path.

Dijkstra's Algo with searching from both ends can speed up the search.

This approach in social n/w sites will be inefficient.

Can use A* search. From wikipedia : "A* uses a best-first search and finds the least-cost path from a given initial node to one goal node (out of one or more possible goals)."
