Smartphones are going to be the remote control of life. While the use of laptops and desktops will not be distant, more and more users will transform lot of their daily or frequent routines like checking weather, reading reviews, maps on their smart phones. I also see smart phones changing from devices to wearable technologies where reality will be augmented with virtual world using the augmented reality technology. Google is scratching the surface with their Google Glass.
Smart way of interacting will be twined into human interactions automatically with the proliferation of these technologies. These technologies add value and enrich and empower people to do things smart thereby increasing their productivity. I believe that if the technologies are laid out correctly, and if these technologies add value to individuals, the technology will itself suck people into it.

1. Voice calling
2. Using Smartphone for shopping, as mobile wallet, Money transactions, Bill pay etc
3. Mobile as payment gateway for your bank account
4. All sort of Info search/share/upload/download - it will be a centralized place for keeping all sort of information.
5. Single mode of communication, entertainment, information, pursuing all sort of interests
Smartphones are simply the result of a convergence of technologies in everyone's pocket. I remember explaining to people when Edge network just rolled out that 3G was coming and one day you won't be carrying a separate iPod or MP3 player, and 3G is coming you will eventually get your news and video entertainment there too.
If you track the history, the market will continue down this path, it will pick up whatever new technologies emerge as long as having it available to us so closely is a benefit or novelties involving connection with others.
Smartphones, serves its purpose and the industry seems to make significant progress in terms of technology. However laptops, pc, servers still serve their needs. Smartphone can be considered as an addedd adittion to the technology we have today. For users to move furthur towards smartphone, we should provide them with more freedom of movements. Already research is being done and some implemented in fields like NFC(Near Field Communication), Biometric Smartphone devices and Frameworks like sync which allows instantanous syncing between devices. Adoption of such technologies and coming up with user api's that allows 3rd part services to consume these technologies is crutial for the growth of the smartphone industry.
