You can use Leibniz formula for π

Or approximate circle as regular polygon of N and calculate the perimeter to diameter ration. Increasing N will give you a better estimate of PI

There are a number of infinite series expansions for pi. One classic one is

pi^2/6 = 1 + 1/4 + 1/9 + ... ad inf. (The sum of the reciprocals of all perfect squares).

take a thread of some length m , draw a circle using that string of radius m on the sand. Use the same thread wrap it around the circle find the length , let it be n. n/ 2*m = (approx) PI. since cave man knows basic maths he can divide.
