i think the extern declaration should be extern int a[] instead of extern int *a.

the declaration of an external object tells the compiler the name and type of the object, and that memory allocation is done somewhere else.
Since, we first declare extern int a[] , we do not mention any size here, but in another file size should be specified.

int a[80], int a[50], int a[10], int *a.....
all are different bcz the compiler link it at run time through memory .....all have the different memory structure .....so there would be compile time error
