Generics are compile time checks...they do not perform run time checks since they need to support legacy code prior to generics. Thats the reason a subclass array can be assigned to a superclass array as at run time if the correct object is not stored in an array it throws ArrayStoreException but Since there is no run time check a subclass arraylist cannot be assigned to super class arraylist
