Normally you would represent the graph as a adjancency matrix or adjacency list and traverse through that to create a depth spanning forest.

Adjacency list in case of a sparse graph while adjacency matrix in case of dense graph. check out coreman's algo book.

Adjacency List as we need to know the neighbors of nodes which can be obtained more efficiently in adjacency list representation. In case of adjacency matrix we need to scan through all the n nodes to check if u,v has a edge.
