A pointer can be re-assigned any number of times while a reference variable cannot be re-assigned after initialisation

A pointer can point to null while a reference variable can never point to null

You cant obtain the address of a reference like you do with pointers.

As for C++ compilers,

A reference variable is implemented as a pointer . That is a reference variable occupies the same amount of memory as a pointer.

A a general rule :

Use reference variables as function parameters and return types to define attractive interfaces.

Use pointers to implement algorithms and interfaces.

Reference : Stack overflow
