It seems to done especially in resource constrained environments, for high bandwidth resources like video. One cool thing I read was the usage of counting bloom filters for detecting if none of the collaborating peers have the piece of data. Couldn't get hold of an implementation though.
well it is exactly what it says in the name: collaborative. group of machines are collaborating together to provide caching services to clients (typically in a WWW setting) providing the illusion of a single cache. Google to learn more.
