I would assume that the short URL points to a redirection page to the actual website.

It is possible that a hash-table is maintained at back-end, with the shortened URL as key and original URL as a value.

For ex:
tinyurl.com/ljt7s6w
Here code [ljt7s6w] can be used as a key.
