My thoughts are to provide access methods in the base class that are protected. This will provide access to sub-classes without exposing them to the public.

public class Bar {

	private int _foo = 5;

	protected void setFoo(int value) {
		_foo = value;
	}

	protected int getFoo() {
		return _foo;
	}
}

class Subclass;
class Baseclass{
	friend class Subclass;
private:
	void privateFunc(){};
};
class Subclass:public Baseclass{
public:
	void func(){
		privateFunc();
	}
}

Use private inheritance. This works only on languages that supports it.

+100. "The answer" depends on the language.

Its quite simple..To access the private fields of a base class just use getter and setter methods and declare them public. Your fields wont be exposed as well u can communicate from the outside world
