Just to complete the other answers : reflection can be very usefull for accessing private methods outside of a class. It's not recommended but you never know what you will need. Especially in SWING, numbers of functions are private and if you want to override it, well, there's not much choices left.

Reflection is a feature in the Java programming language. It allows an executing Java program to examine or "introspect" upon itself, and manipulate internal properties of the program. For example, it's possible for a Java class to obtain the names of all its members and display them.

For example, reflection examine the information related to the field, method and constructor of the class.

adding to above all: Reflection allows you to create an object of class by just using the name with namespace details and then execute the method associated with it.
