No, it is not possible.

Let's call each square an even square if the x and y coordinate adds to an even number, and odd square if x and y adds to an odd number. The each 2x1 block will be composed of exactly one even square and one odd square. So to cover the chess board completely you have to have equal number of even and odd square to begin with.

If n is odd, you have an odd number of total squares, so obviously you cannot cover them all using a block of even number (2) of squares.

If n is even, you are left with n/2 odd squares but n/2 - 2 even squares (because the two corner squares removed are both even ones). So since there is not equal number of even and odd squares you cannot cover them all using 2x1 blocks, as stated above.
