• Pipes are kernel objects that provide unstructured data exchange and facilitate synchronization among tasks. In a traditional implementation, a pipe is a unidirectional data exchange facility.
• Two descriptors, one for each end of the pipe (one end for reading and one for writing), are returned when the pipe is created.
• Data is written via one descriptor and read via the other. The data remains in the pipe as an unstructured byte stream. Data is read from the pipe in FIFO order.

As per my knowledge pipe implemented as file inodes so the information they can hold is limited bcoz all the info stay in structures, while using pipe for communication when u read it, data automatically removed from pipe and u not need to take care of it.

In prisons, inmates can use the pipes to send messages and small packages to each other, but you have to watch out for all of the crap. Outside of prisons though, people tend not to use pipes for communication.
