A mutex is a mechanism that provides an atomic test-and-set operation on a variable. Most CPUs provide a single instruction for this purpose, but it can also be performed in a multi-instruction sequence if all interrupts (including the NMI, if any) are masked.

concurrency control device to handle the shared resource accessed by multiple process. In order to modify any shared resource safely, one process has to acquire the mutex control. Once a process get mutex, it can modify the shared resource's context. Otherwise, it must wait for getting mutex until current mutex holder releases it.
