isn't this easy with a simple bash script?

tail -n 5 /path/to/log/file

How about assuming length of line as N characters and then using fseek()?
That is go to EOF and then reverse N bytes from there? Comments.

can be done like 5th node from last in a linked list

read a few lines from the end of the file to the local buffer and then if the no of lines is < N read on more lines moving file ptr using fseek and then print them else if no of line > N then print no of line.

I think this questions refers to using circular array.. We take a circular array of five and keep storing lines in array till EOF is reached.. Array will have last 5 lines of file
