Can the executable read the numbers from text file to memory, then do the sorting and ten write it back to the file?

The first solution that comes to my mind is to check it against a known n^2 algorithm implementation for a known set of input.

Run it with different set of files, i.e. 10, 100, 1000, 1000000 elements, and compare the running time statistics with n, nlogn, n^2.

When you dont know the algorithm but only know the size of input , the only way to go is experiment with different input sizes .

This is just a statistical measure and may not truely indicate the complexity of the program.
