Of course not. Thread safety can be implemented in the user code based on the need. Putting it inside the Thread Map will make everyone pay performance penalty irrespective of their need.

But map could be easily implemented with different thread models: map<int, string, SingleThreaded> and map<int, string, MultiThreaded>. stl designers do not take into account the multi-threading.

so I will say the STL containers are not thread-safe unless thread-safe mechanisms are added?
