Each and every process running on windows (or any other OS) is provided with a predefined amount of virtual memory in case of vc++ apps I think it is 4 GB.

Though the RAM size is say 512 MB or 1GB , OS will ensure such a huge memory for processes using "Paging" mechanism.

Virtual memory is a concept, in which OS gives illusion to compiler that

It has got much larger address space than physican address sapce(size of RAM)

This address space is contiguous and dedicated to a process. that is compiler can use it all starting from address #0

size of virtual memory is dependent onno.of address lines in the address bus i.e. 2^(no.of address lines)..
