How does a referrer help?

I know that a referrer(employee of the company who refers you) gives you a head start into the process

But if something goes wrong, like you don't hear from the recruiter even before your phone interviews or you get stuck somewhere in the loop, should you contact your referrer?is it appropriate?

Well, if your referrer is someone you know, why won't you contact them?

Your referrer should be a friend or professional contact who knows you well and who can vouch for you and your work. Given this degree of confidence in you by your referrer, it would definitely be appropriate both for you to follow up with your referrer, and for your referrer to follow up with you. I always follow up with both people who refer me and people that I've referred until the process is complete.
