Hashtables are synchronized I.e can be used in multi threaded applocations and hash maps are not synchronized.

This is the difference between HashMap and Hashtable in Java. But when used as a general term in computing, the terms can be synonymous.

Hashtable is synchronized while HashMap is not. Another difference is HashMap can have null values and one null key, but Hashtable cannot have anything that's null.

HashMap is unsynchronized and permits nulls. Whereas Hashtable is unsynchronized. HashMap allows null values as key and values. Hashtable does not guarantee the order of the order of the map will remain constant over time.
