I had similar question for my Microsoft interview in 2000 but it was about FAT table. I needed to find starting point of each file in a given hard drive when FAT is corrupted.

Worst Case was O(N2) and Yes I used Hashtable for that in my psedu code.

After identifying loop in linked list, find the number of elements in the loops (say c)

So now start from head(first node) and travel by C+1. If the C+1 node is head then head is the one..

Otherwise keep on incrementing both poiterns from start and C+1 th, till they are equal.
