I'd base it on a trie structure, and to every trie node attach a measure of how often the node is visited. Then you could for example convert this measure to percentages, and visit the paths with the highest percentages until you've reached a set percentage or found a set number of paths, then display those paths as suggestions.

For example, if the user types auto, then the path for 'm' might look like this:

It includes automobile automatic and automated; each branch branches into further options, all of which are added up to form the percentage of queries.

Not fully thought out yet, but something along those lines.

I think we can use edit distance algorithm, so it find the distances between the typed words and the most researched words.
