Need to approach this from multiple angles..
- sungmj July 23, 20091) economics: in TLC, you need to analyze how much it would cost to automate your test for the given SUT. test design/implementation vs. test execution.. automation tends to be much expensive during test design/implementation, but much cheaper during test execution phase. Multiple factors affect this.. a) SUT complexity, b) SUT in flux? c) number of platform permutations you need to run test against d) number of test run required e) code reusability f) how easy to debug / narrow down issues..
2) defect trend: automation means upfront investment in early PLC, thus less defects will be found during the test dev/implement phase. Is this critical for your project? then need to find alternatives or complements.
3) pesticide paradox: research shows automation and manual testing detects different types of bugs.. there's no pesticide that kills all kinda bugs. !
