You cannot call non-static method from a static method. You can only call static method from a static method.
But you can all static method from a non-static method.
The essence is static methods are available when the class is loaded and non-static methods are available when a object is created. Class loading always happens before object creation.

class prog2
{ public void function1()
{System.out.print("In Function1");}
}

public class prog1
{ public static void main(String args[])
{ prog2 a=new prog2();
a.function1(); //calling a non-static function from a static function
}
}

The idea is that you can not call a non static function without instantiating the class.
