on macro expansion code will be :
if(b++>5) printf("greater"); //5>5 : fail
else if(b++<5) printf("lesser"); //6<5 : fail
else if(b++==5) printf("equal"); //7==5 : fail
else printf("unknown");

#define is not a value and you cannot pass it to a function!

pass this expression as argument: printf("unknown")--which returns 7(number of characters), but this would print: unknown greater
